What Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice Is About
The 2019 documentary by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman follows Linda Ronstadt, who began on the folk rock scene at the end of the sixties and kept changing genre across thirty years. She moved between rock, country, operetta, the American standards and the Mexican mariachi tradition, and the companies objected every time. The matter at the centre is that insistence: Ronstadt followed her own curiosity rather than the concern for sales. Her father being Mexican and what the mariachi album meant to her carry the emotional weight. Parkinson's disease means she can no longer sing, and the film leaves that to the end. The archive performances are strong. The account is chronological and formally conventional. Who it's for: viewers who like American popular music and portraits of artists. Who it's not for: anyone wanting critical distance, or avoiding the subject of illness.
