What Cotton Comes to Harlem Is About
In Harlem, the Reverend Deke O'Malley is running a Back to Africa campaign, promising land in Africa to anyone who donates. Two detectives, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, think it is a swindle. Then the money disappears inside a bale of cotton, and the number of people in Harlem looking for that bale rises fast: O'Malley, the police, the mob, everyone on the street. Adapted from Chester Himes's novel and directed by Ossie Davis, made with a Black cast and aimed at a Black audience, it is generally counted among the films that opened the way for the blaxploitation wave. It runs as comedy and as a crime picture at the same time.
