Crazy World

Nabwana IGG's 2019 Ugandan film follows a gang that kidnaps children. The group they take turns out to be children trained in kung fu, and before long the situation reverses. The film was shot in a neighbourhood of Kampala with almost no budget. The effects are handmade, the weapons built from scrap and the cast drawn from local residents; the conditions of production are not concealed but form part of the film. In screenings a narrator's voice rides over the image and comments on what is happening; that practice comes from the region's video hall tradition and is heard throughout. Who it's for: those curious about low-budget action cinema and unusual conditions of production. Who it's not for: viewers expecting technical competence; the film displays its roughness deliberately and uses violence as comedy.
