Bad Black

In Uganda a mild-mannered doctor has a family heirloom necklace stolen. It is in the hands of the country's toughest gang and the doctor has no skill with which to get it back. A child from the ghetto decides to train him in commando fighting. At the same time the story of Bad Black, the woman who leads the gang, is told: how she grew up, what she lost, and how she became this. Nabwana IGG's film was shot in the Wakaliga district of Kampala. The budget does not exceed a few hundred dollars; the guns, helicopters and explosions are hand-made and added on a computer. The film does not hide this, it shows it. Its most distinctive feature is the narration by VJ Emmie: in the manner of the person who comments live on films in Ugandan video halls, he comments on what is happening on screen throughout, talks to the audience and makes jokes. Who it's for: Viewers who like low-budget genre cinema, Wakaliwood productions, and unusual modes of narration. Who it's not for: The image and sound quality are very low. The violence is exaggerated and some scenes are crude.
