What Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex Is About
Making a monster for the screen is a craft: taking casts, pouring latex, building mechanisms, laying in hair one strand at a time. The documentary tells the history of that work, from Ray Harryhausen's animated models to Rick Baker's makeup, from the creatures Stan Winston built to the arrival of computer-generated images. The account follows step by step how the craft changed. Alexandre Poncet's film talks to the best known names in the field: Guillermo del Toro, Joe Dante, Dennis Muren, Greg Nicotero, Alec Gillis and Chris Walas. The real question it asks is not technical but emotional: why a creature made by hand sits differently on screen, and why most of the people speaking think the computer has not quite delivered that. The test footage and the on-set material are the most valuable part of the film.
