What Crime Without Passion Is About
Written and directed together by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur in 1934, this film follows Lee Gentry, an arrogant lawyer played by Claude Rains. Gentry is seen in public with Katy Costello while carrying on with the dancer Carmen Brown, and when he tries to end that, a struggle over a gun ends with a shot. Believing she is dead, Gentry starts assembling ever wilder alibis under the guidance of an alter ego that talks to him like his own ghost. The most discussed part of the film is its opening: Slavko Vorkapich's montage, in which three Furies rise from drops of blood and fly out over the city. An opening like that was rare in American cinema of the thirties.
