A man walks into a police station to report a murder, and when they ask who the victim is he points at himself. Frank Bigelow, an accountant who went to San Francisco for a few days away from his fiancée, has been poisoned without noticing, and there is no antidote. He has about a day to find his own killer. Rudolph Maté works from one of the tightest set ups in noir: the hero has already lost, and the only purpose of all the running is to find out why. Edmond O’Brien leads.
