What The 300 Spartans Is About
The Persian army is marching on Greece and Leonidas, king of Sparta, holds the pass at Thermopylae with three hundred men rather than wait for the cities to agree. Rudolph Maté shot it in Greece with the Greek army supplying extras, so the crowds in the battle scenes are actually crowds. The telling is more measured than the epics of its moment: there is heroism but no inflated mysticism, and the film keeps its attention on what the narrow ground tactically means. Richard Egan plays Leonidas. Its real mark on film history is indirect, since Frank Miller has described watching this as a child and the comic 300 coming out of it. Who it is for: viewers who like sixties historical epics and location shooting. Who it is not for: anyone wanting the pace of a modern battle sequence.
