What Darling, I Am Going Out for Cigarettes and I Will Be Right Back Is About
Ernesto is seventy, an ordinary man. He makes a deal with a strange figure and gets the chance to go back and live his youth over. His plan is to pick up the opportunities he missed and to avoid certain behaviours, and so drag his grey present into some colour. Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat direct it together, from a story by Alberto Laiseca, who also appears in the cast. The tone the pair are known for in Argentine cinema runs through it: they take the fantastical premise seriously and then put hard, sardonic and occasionally cruel humour inside it. What comes out mocks not the second chance but the man who thinks he has earned one.
