A celebrated writer who has lived in Europe for decades returns to the Argentine town he was born in to accept an honour, and the warmer the welcome the faster the tension builds. The film protects neither side: he looks down on the people whose lives he converted into literature, and they believe they have paid for what he wrote. Both are right, which is where the comedy comes from and why it turns menacing. The scene with the painting competition jury is the best in it. The ending is left deliberately unresolved.
