This 1945 Italian documentary is the joint work of Mario Serandrei, Marcello Pagliero, Luchino Visconti and Giuseppe De Santis, and is generally called the first compilation film about the Resistance. It covers the stretch between September 1943 and April 1945, the collapse of the fascist regime and the liberation of the country. Nothing in it is staged. The trial of Pietro Caruso, the Rome police chief, is real footage; so are the executions of Caruso and of Pietro Koch; so is the lynching of Donato Carretta, the governor of Regina Coeli prison, by a crowd. Visconti was the one who took charge of the camera for those sequences. It was produced by ANPI, the partisans’ own association. Roberto Rossellini was shooting Rome, Open City in the same months, and neorealism came out of exactly this material.
