What Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid Is About
A detective working in the nineteen-forties takes a case from the daughter of a missing scientist. In the course of it he runs into Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck and Cary Grant. That is the whole trick: real scenes from old noir films are combined with newly shot material so that dead actors appear to be talking to the hero. Costume and lighting were matched exactly so the joins would not show. Carl Reiner directed, with Steve Martin in the lead, shot in black and white. The costumes are by Edith Head, and it was her last work. Who it's for: those who know the noir tradition and like parody. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen those films; most of the jokes depend on recognition.
