Summer School

A comedy set in an American high school. Freddy teaches physical education. He is planning to go to Hawaii for the summer; the tickets are bought and the case is packed. At the last moment the school gives him a job: he will teach English in summer school. The class is made of students who failed. A surfer, two enthusiasts of horror films, a pregnant student, a young man just learning English and one who never turns up. At first Freddy avoids teaching: he shows films, takes them outside, arranges a trip. The administration notices and tells him he will lose his job if they fail the examination. From there the film becomes an attempt at teaching. Everyone has a separate problem and Freddy has to deal with them one by one. The humour comes from the types in the class; the make-up jokes of the two horror enthusiasts are the most remembered part. Mark Harmon plays Freddy and Kirstie Alley the teacher next door. Carl Reiner directed. A familiar choice for anyone who likes the school comedies of the 1980s. For a viewer wanting a new narrative, the film takes the known steps of the genre and gathers everyone together at the end.
