Dear Nathan: Hello Salma

Indra Gunawan's 2018 Indonesian film follows a couple separated when one of them has to change schools. Nathan and Salma try to settle into new surroundings, and the new people around them test the relationship. The narrative follows the pattern of teenage romance, but Nathan's problem with anger and his family history are kept inside it; the film gives this not as a flaw but as something that has to be worked on continuously. Jefri Nichol and Amanda Rawles lead, and as the second film in a series it leans on the audience of the first. The tone is light and the music foregrounded. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian teen romance and follow the series. Who it's not for: people who have not seen the first film; the narrative assumes the characters' history.
