Dear Pyongyang

The documentary is about the director’s own family. They are a Korean family living in Japan. The father is a man of communist conviction. He was a leading figure of the pro North movement in Japan. A repatriation campaign began in the nineteen seventies. It was run by the North Korean representation in Japan. The father sent his three sons to North Korea. The director, the daughter of the house, stayed in Japan. The economy in the North grew worse over the years. The brothers came to depend on the parcels their parents sent. The director travels to Pyongyang to visit them. She carries the camera with her. She has long conversations with her father. He speaks of his conviction and of his regret. Yang Yong-hi directed the one hundred seven minute documentary. It is a Japanese production finished in 2006.
