What Death Is a Caress Is About
An engaged mechanic begins a stormy affair with a wealthy married woman who brings her car in for repair. As it goes on it becomes unclear which of them holds the other, and the thing drifts toward an ending that cannot be avoided. Edith Carlmar’s first film is also the first Norwegian film directed by a woman, and is counted as the country’s first film noir. It caused serious argument when it came out. It works on class, desire and control at once, and neither demonises the woman nor entirely clears her.
