What The Wayward Girl Is About
Gerd, whom everyone has decided is a woman of dubious morals, falls for Anders, a university student whose family will not accept the relationship. The two run off and settle in a cabin in the woods, where a sullen man they meet there starts testing what they have. Edith Carlmar's 1959 film matters twice over in Norwegian cinema: Carlmar was the country's first woman director and this was her last film, and it gave a twenty year old Liv Ullmann her first leading role. Class, sexuality and the label stuck on a woman are handled with surprising directness for 1959.
