What Decisive Engagement: The Liaoxi Shenyang Campaign Is About
The first film of the trilogy covers the Liaoxi Shenyang campaign, one of the three decisive operations of the Chinese Civil War. The preparations that begin in the spring of 1948, the operation launched on 12 September and the fighting that continues in the northeast until 1 November are shown both from the units at the front and from the decisions taken at headquarters. Produced by the August First Film Studio, it was built as an epic that used real troops for its battle scenes and that carries the state’s official account, a quality as plain as anything else in it. The film, running about three and a half hours, was named best picture at both the Golden Rooster and the Hundred Flowers awards. Gu Yue plays Mao Zedong.
