What Dedication Is About
Henry Roth writes children's books and does not much like children, or people. He has his rituals, his fears and a cruel tongue, and for years his only real partner has been Rudy, who illustrates the books. When Rudy dies the publisher supplies a young illustrator instead, and Henry has to discover that he cannot work while letting nobody in. Justin Theroux's first film as director never fully escapes the template of the difficult man softened by a beautiful woman. But Billy Crudup's Henry is not the likeable cynic of romantic comedy, he is genuinely hard work, and Tom Wilkinson refuses to leave the film when his character dies.
