Choi Kook-hee's 2018 film covers the weeks in which the 1997 Asian financial crisis hit South Korea, and was the first Korean feature to take the subject head on. Three strands run in parallel. Si-hyun, who leads the monetary policy team at the Bank of Korea, reads the incoming data, sees that the country is about to be unable to pay, and is put on the crisis team. A financial consultant notices foreign money draining out and decides to profit from the collapse. A small factory owner, knowing none of it, signs a large order. The film stages the negotiation with the IMF behind closed doors and openly attacks the terms of the bailout, with Vincent Cassel as the IMF official. Its point of view is not neutral and it makes no attempt to pretend otherwise. Who it's for: viewers who like economic crisis narratives and Korean drama built on recent history. Who it's not for: anyone expecting the subject handled from several sides; the film names a culprit.
