Tom Hanks What Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War Is About
In February 1939 Waitstill Sharp, a Unitarian minister serving in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and his wife Martha, trained as a social worker, left their two children with their parish and went to Europe. Their purpose was to help Jews and other refugees escape from countries under Nazi occupation, and over two years, at risk to their own lives, they helped hundreds of people get out. The ninety minute documentary, directed jointly by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, rests on the couple’s letters and on the testimony of those they saved. Tom Hanks provides the voice of Waitstill. What set the couple in motion was word from a fellow congregation in Prague, which moved the Unitarian Universalist Association to act. It was broadcast on PBS in September 2016.
