What Deli Man Is About
The documentary follows Ziggy Gruber, who comes from a family that has done the same work for three generations and who runs a delicatessen restaurant in Houston. He began making stuffed cabbage standing on a crate at the age of eight; now he is both the owner and a trained cook. While following his daily work the film also tells the story of this kitchen itself: a tradition of food built in America by migrants from central and eastern Europe, and the slow shrinking of that tradition. The account visits long established places in other cities as well, and people who know this cooking speak in it. The film is a story of migration and continuity as much as a documentary about food. Erik Anjou’s ninety one minute American documentary was completed in 2015.
