In France before the Revolution, a cook named Manceron is dismissed from a duke's kitchen for serving a dish nobody authorised: potato and truffle, two ingredients the nobility held in contempt. He returns to his family inn in the provinces and stops cooking. Then a mysterious woman arrives asking to be his apprentice and gets him back to the stove. Éric Besnard builds it as a food film with a plain subtext, since the right to choose from a menu, a table open to anyone and the idea of paying for a meal add up to a class revolution: the restaurant itself. Grégory Gadebois plays the cook coarse and brittle. The landscape and the food are the seductive part; the history is used freely. Who it is for: viewers who like period pieces and kitchen stories. Who it is not for: anyone after historical accuracy, since the birth of the restaurant is hung on invented characters.
