A nineteen-year-old takes a summer job in Provincetown and ends up inside a restaurant kitchen. He starts on dishes, moves to service, and loves the noise and the speed. The kid is Anthony Bourdain, and that summer sets the course of the rest of his life. The film is not about the famous Bourdain. It is about someone who has not yet become anything finding the first place he can belong to, and its source is Bourdain's book Kitchen Confidential. The kitchen here is not romantic: it is hot, coarse and habit-forming. Matt Johnson directed. Johnson was known for BlackBerry, and that film's hurried handheld manner carries over. Dominic Sessa plays the young Bourdain. The cast includes Emilia Jones, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommer, Stavros Halkias, Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas. A24 released it, and it opened in August 2026. Leaning on Bourdain's own account is both the film's strength and its limit: the book was already a text that built his legend. Who it is for: anyone who likes kitchen stories, eighties America and Bourdain. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a whole life. The film stays inside one summer, says almost nothing about what came after, and some of the people around the lead stay at sketch level.
