Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie

Two musicians in Toronto, Matt and Jay, have been after the same thing for years: booking a gig at the Rivoli. This time they try to draw attention with a skydiving stunt and it goes wrong. Matt then builds a fake time machine modelled on Back to the Future, and when a bottle of Orbitz soda spills on it the thing actually works and the two land in 2008. The rest of the film is about what happens when they change what their younger selves decided. Matt Johnson directed and wrote it with Jay McCarrol, playing a fictionalised version of himself. It is based on the web series Nirvana the Band the Show, made between 2007 and 2009, and its television version from 2017 to 2018, both by Johnson and McCarrol. The financing came out of another film: the success of Johnson's BlackBerry in 2023 made this budget possible through Telefilm Canada. It premiered at South by Southwest on 9 March 2025 and opened in cinemas on 13 February 2026. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 95 percent. It won Best Motion Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards. Who it is for: people who know the series and like guerrilla comedy shot without permission. Who it is not for: newcomers. Most of the humour depends on recognising an attitude these two have kept up for years.
