What Denise Calls Up Is About
A group of friends in New York, all of them working at their computers. They keep in touch only by telephone and fax; nobody has time to meet face to face. Gale plays matchmaker by phone, Martin gets a call from Denise, whom he has never met, and a kind of friendship forms between them, again by phone. The whole film consists of these conversations and no two of them are ever in the same frame. Hal Salwen made these eighty minutes in 1995, before the internet had entered daily life. It has turned into something else since: an early note on how technology makes loneliness easier.
