What Der brave Soldat Schwejk Is About
Josef Schwejk, who makes his living dealing dogs in Prague, is about to be sent to prison for insulting the emperor, but because he is taken for a simpleton he is put in an asylum instead. When the First World War breaks out he finds himself in the army, and by sheer guilelessness and by following orders to the letter he jams the entire military machine around him. Axel von Ambesser directed, adapting Jaroslav Hašek’s novel of the same name, from a screenplay by Hans Jacoby and produced by Artur Brauner. Heinz Rühmann plays Schwejk with a quiet, sly likeability. The common objection from critics was that the malice, the bitter irony and the derision of Hašek’s book are largely softened here, leaving a much more docile comedy. A young Senta Berger is in the cast.
