What Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y Is About
The documentary tells the history of aircraft hijacking. The Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez assembled it. All of the material comes from existing footage. News tapes, home videos and pieces of science fiction are set side by side. In the sixties and seventies hijackers found plenty of room on the screens. By the nineties those figures have disappeared. Anonymous bombs in suitcases take their place. Grimonprez asks about the politics of that change. An imagined conversation between a novelist and a militant runs through the film. The text of it was taken from two novels by Don DeLillo. The novels are Mao II and White Noise. The work was first shown in 1997 at the Documenta X exhibition. The sixty eight minute documentary is a Belgian and French coproduction finished in 1997.
