What Dick Johnson Is Dead Is About

A documentary, but not in the ordinary sense: the director Kirsten Johnson stages her father's death over and over. An air conditioner falls on Dick Johnson's head, he tumbles down a staircase, a car hits him in the street, all of it shot with stunt doubles, jokes and laughter. His own funeral and his own version of heaven are staged too. While he acts these out his memory really is going, and the film becomes an attempt to cope with death by rehearsing it. The staged deaths are not real; the loss is.
