What Disappearance Is About
On a cold winter night in present day Tehran, two young lovers run into a serious problem and have only a few hours to find a way out of it. They go from hospital to hospital, and one after another refuses to admit the young woman or give her the care she urgently needs. At the same time they have to keep the whole night hidden from their parents, because being found out is as dangerous to them as the problem itself, and their relationship begins to crack under the pressure of those hours. Ali Asgari’s first feature runs eighty nine minutes and holds two young people between conservative tradition and present day desire, with no certainty about what comes next. The Iranian Qatari co-production premiered in the Orizzonti section at Venice in 2017 and played Toronto the same year.
