A homeless girl is found dead in an old district of Istanbul. The police detain several people from the neighbourhood and record their statements one by one. The film is made of those statements: each character looks at the camera and talks. Who knew the girl, who helped her and where each of them was that night changes with every account. The stories do not match, and the neighbourhood looks for a culprit among its own: Kaya, who is said to behave strangely. Ümit Ünal writes and directs. Ozan Güven, Serra Yılmaz, Fikret Kuşkan, Cezmi Baskın and Ali Poyrazoğlu are in the cast. The whole film takes place in one room, the interrogation room, and the characters speak straight to camera. It was shot on digital video for very little money; it was among the first films made that way in Turkey at the time and set an example for independent production. The subject is not the killing but how a community marks the one who is different. Nobody has to lie; everyone tells their own truth and the sum of it becomes an accusation. It was Turkey's official submission for the foreign language award at the 2003 Academy Awards and was not nominated. It was named best Turkish film at the Istanbul film festival and took the screenplay and first film awards in Ankara. Who it is for: viewers who like films set in one place and narratives built on testimony. Who it is not for: it is visually constrained, consists entirely of talk, and has no plot.
