What Don's Party Is About
Bruce Beresford's 1976 Australian film was made from David Williamson's own adaptation of his play. It is 25 October 1969, the night of a federal election. Don Henderson invites a group of friends over because he is sure Labor will win; his wife Kath is not enthusiastic about the idea. As the night goes on the results do not arrive as expected, and drinking, jokes, flirtation and fighting all get mixed together in the same room. The film turns a political victory party into a mirror the middle class is holding up to itself. It became one of the first Australian pictures to find wide distribution abroad.
