What Money Movers Is About

A heist film set in Australia. There is a cash transport company. Armoured vans, a counting centre and a vault. A plan is running inside it. Eric and Brian are brothers. Both work there and plan to rob the centre. They have inside knowledge. Shift times, the alarm system and the movement of cash. A day has been chosen. There will be a very large sum in the vault that night. From there the film is a story of preparation. Who does what, who opens the door, who drives. Another line runs at the same time. There is a police informer in the company. He passes information to management. And there is a party outside. A local crime organisation knows the same night and wants the same money. Jack Henderson leads it. Quiet, careful, and he kills when he has to. The management is not clean either. There is bribery and blind eyes at the top. What the narrative is interested in is not a robbery but infiltration: its idea is that three separate plans run in the same building without knowing about each other, and that who is working for whom stays unclear to the end. The night of the robbery is the last section. A gunfight breaks out inside the building. The violence is sudden and without display. The narrative gives nobody a share of heroism. The ending is entirely dark. The structure rests on procedure. The narrative shows the processes in detail: counting, sealing, recording, handover. The source is Devon Minchin's book; he was a man who actually founded a cash transport company in Australia. Bruce Beresford made this early in his career and its tone is far harder than his other work. Bryan Brown is here in one of his early parts. Terence Donovan, Tony Bonner, Ed Devereaux and Bryan Brown are in the cast. Who it is for: anyone who likes the hard period of Australian cinema and procedural heist films. Who it is not for: anyone looking for depth of character; the narrative is crowded, the names hard to follow, and nobody is introduced.
