Don't Cry, Peter

Two partisan miners are given what is called an honourable task: to take three orphaned children out of a zone of fighting and deliver them to safe territory. At first the two look down on the job, since they would rather be in some more important action. As the journey goes on they warm to the children, and above all become close friends with Peter, the youngest. The film tells the war not through scenes at the front but through the difficulty of carrying three children. What counts as important work is the question at the centre. The account takes heroism away from great deeds and moves it to everyday responsibility. In this war comedy shot in Yugoslavia the tone is light and bitter at once. Lojze Rozman and Bert Sotlar appear in France Štiglic’s eighty eight minute film, completed in 1964.
