What Dorian Blues Is About

Dorian accepts that he is gay in his last year of high school. He meets someone like himself in town, but only gets more confused. He goes to therapy, he goes to church, he cannot quite tell anyone. In the end he tells his older brother first, and his brother takes it better than he expected. When he tells his father he is thrown out of the house and has to build a life on his own. Tennyson Bardwell's independent film pulls the coming-out story out of the heavy register of drama and closer to comedy. Dorian is joking constantly, and the jokes are both a defence and a way of telling. The best thing in the film is the relationship between the two brothers: the bond between the football-playing older brother and his sibling is built without falling into cliche. Michael McMillian plays Dorian.
