Xiao-xue, a language teacher newly arrived in Hong Kong from the mainland, becomes fixated on the strange dot graffiti that keeps appearing around the MTR stations. She is convinced the dots make a pattern and sets out to crack it, and every marking she chases takes her into another corner of the city’s history and its sense of itself, including the connect-the-dots puzzles that used to run in children’s magazines. Amos Why wrote and directed his first feature, which was first shown at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2014 and went on general release on 30 October that year. Moses Chan and Meng Tingyi star, and the film has generally been read as a letter written to the city.
