What Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo Is About
Forced to leave Syria by the war, little Dounia sets out with her grandparents to look for somewhere safe. The road begins in Aleppo and goes on until they find a door that will take them in. At every stop the girl draws her strength from the old tales opened up by the nigella seeds her grandmother carries; the stories lift her out of the fear of the present and into another time. In telling children about seeking refuge, the animation keeps the war off the screen; what it shows instead is loss, the company of the road, and how much the grown ups choose to tell a child. The seventy two minute film by Marya Zarif and Andre Kadi was completed in 2023.
