What Down House Is About

Dostoevsky's The Idiot moved into the Russia of 2001. Prince Myshkin is a programmer, coming home after treatment in a Swiss psychiatric clinic. On the bus he meets the businessman Parfyon Rogozhin, who is sick with love for Nastasya Filippovna. The novel is followed closely and everything in it is rewritten through techno, money and nineties Russia. Roman Kachanov's film caused a considerable row when it appeared: some read it as desecration of a classic, others as the most daring thing anyone had made that year. Fyodor Bondarchuk and Ivan Okhlobystin star. Eighty minutes, short and fast.
