Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

A respected London doctor believes the good and bad in a person can be separated, and tries the formula on himself. The separated half keeps asking for more time. The film shows the transformation in a single take without cutting, using colour filters and layers of makeup, and the technique was kept secret for years. The narrative builds the second self not as a monster but as a man freed of his restraints, and ties the violence to sexual repression. Rouben Mamoulian directed. Fredric March stars and won an Oscar for the role, shared that year with another actor. It was made before the censorship rules tightened. A real warning: systematic violence against a woman and sexual coercion are dealt with directly. Some of those scenes were cut from later prints.
