What Golden Boy Is About
Joe Bonaparte is the son of an Italian immigrant family and plays the violin. His father wants him to be a musician. Joe thinks he has not got the patience to wait and starts boxing; the money comes at once. He is good in the ring. But boxing wrecks the hand and the violin is finished. Then a gambler appears around him and wants to buy a piece of Joe. The source is Clifford Odets's play from 1937. Rouben Mamoulian directed. William Holden plays Joe and it is his first big part; the studio wanted to take him off the picture during shooting and Barbara Stanwyck objected and got him kept. Holden never forgot it and sent her flowers every year on the day filming had started. At the Oscars in 1978 he said so in front of everyone. Ninety-nine minutes.
