What Dry Cleaning Is About
Nicole and Jean-Marie have run a dry cleaner's in Belfort for fifteen years; their lives are the shop, the flat and the same street. One night in a club they watch a young man called Loïc perform with his sister, and he draws both of them at once. Before long Loïc is in their home, in their shop and inside their life. Anne Fontaine's 1997 film treats this not as a scandal but as two people finally looking at their own lives from outside. The subject is not desire so much as what desire does to an arrangement. The screenplay won the Golden Osella at Venice in 1997 and Stanislas Merhar took the César for most promising actor. Miou-Miou and Charles Berling play the couple.
