What How I Killed My Father Is About
Anne Fontaine's 2001 film follows Jean-Luc, a successful doctor with a clinic in Versailles. His life is in order: the clinic, his wife Isa, his mistress Myriem, his brother Patrick who works as a driver. When his father Maurice, who left for Africa more than twenty years ago and never sent word, suddenly returns, the ground under all of that gives way. The film stages no grand showdown; it shows instead how unbearable it is for a father and a son merely to be in the same room. Michel Bouquet won the César for best actor for this, opposite Charles Berling. The killing the title has in mind is not a literal one.
