What Duet for One Is About
In Andrei Konchalovsky’s 1986 film, Julie Andrews plays Stephanie, a celebrated violinist diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the height of her career. As the illness makes playing impossible, everything else comes apart with it: her husband leaves her for another woman, her favourite pupil leaves the country, and there is nothing left to hold. Stephanie attempts suicide. The film does not treat the illness as a lesson to be learned but as the removal of an identity, and the part sits a very long way from the Andrews of the musicals. Alan Bates, Max von Sydow and Rupert Everett play opposite her. Konchalovsky made it in England, in English.
