What Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer Is About
Thom Andersen’s hour-long documentary holds biography, history, film theory and open philosophical argument in the same place. Muybridge’s photographic studies of animal locomotion in the 1870s were among the most important forerunners of cinema; what Andersen finds even more interesting is the later work, the sequences of assorted human beings photographed against neutral backgrounds. With help from the filmmaker Morgan Fisher, Andersen rephotographed and then animated more than three thousand of Muybridge’s sequential images, which brings the experiments back to life while the film weighs their aesthetic value and their effect on science and on the birth of the movies. Dean Stockwell narrates and Michael Cohen wrote the score.
