Early One Morning

Monday morning. Paul, fifty, arrives at the bank where he has worked for decades just as he does every day. He walks into a meeting room and kills two of his superiors. Then he shuts himself in his own office. In the time before the police arrive, the film goes back and looks at this man's life: what changed at work, what ended at home, and when it was that nobody noticed. Jean-Marc Moutout's film does not build the event as a thriller; it states the act at the start and looks for the reason. The changed working practices of banking, the targets and his age are what the film is really about. Jean-Pierre Darroussin plays Paul almost without raising his voice. The telling neither justifies the man nor turns him into a monster; it just shows how he got here.
