What East Side, West Side Is About
Mervyn LeRoy's 1949 film looks inside a marriage that appears to be in good order in New York. Brandon Bourne, a vain businessman, seems happy with Jessie, his wealthy and well-liked wife, and the picture cracks when Isabel, an old girlfriend, comes back to the city. The film treats the affair not as a great scandal but as something everyone knows and nobody says. Barbara Stanwyck, James Mason, Van Heflin and Ava Gardner share the cast. Nancy Davis, later Nancy Reagan, appears in a small part. An MGM picture of its period: polished, orderly and dark underneath.
