What East/West Is About
In June 1946 Stalin invited the Russians who had left after the 1917 revolution to come home. It was a trap: when the ship docks at Odessa the passengers are divided into two groups and one of them is shot. Alexei, a doctor, and Marie, his French wife, survive only because the state has a use for him, and they are sent to Kiev. Marie wants to leave for France immediately; Alexei understands that they are prisoners and that every step has to be measured. It was nominated for the foreign language Oscar.
