Eden

In the nineteen-thirties a handful of Europeans settle an empty island in the Galapagos to get away from civilisation. They mean to build their own utopia. The island is small, the resources thin, and each arrival brings a private idea of how to live. The film turns the utopia into an arithmetic of survival quickly; its interest is not in the ideas but in what happens to them when hunger arrives. Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Daniel Bruhl are in the cast. It is markedly darker than Ron Howard's usual register. The story rests on real events on Floreana in the nineteen-thirties that were never fully explained. The film proposes an answer; watch it knowing that answer is not proven.
