What When a Man Loves a Woman Is About
The life of a couple with two children changes when the wife's drinking can no longer be hidden. She goes into treatment, and when she returns everything at home runs on the order her husband has built. The film does not present recovery as a happy ending; the narrative is most interested in her taking her own decisions back and in him experiencing that as a loss. The second half is built entirely on that tension. Luis Mandoki directed, with Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia; Philip Seymour Hoffman appears in an early role. A real warning: there is addiction, scenes of drunkenness witnessed by children, and an accident. This is not a romantic drama but a heavy family one.
