What Educate Yourself My Son Is About
Written and directed by Thodoros Maragos, this is a village level social comedy about Greece after the colonels. It sets the big words the country lives by, nation, religion, education, family, against what daily life in the countryside actually offers, and it is as hard on ideological rigidity as it is on a state with no real appetite for using the people it has. The film is remembered for holding the balance between political satire, drama and comedy rather than settling into any one of them. It took four prizes at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 1981: best actor for Vasilis Diamantopoulos, best actress for Anna Matzourani, a special acting award for Nikos Kalogeropoulos, and one for set design.
